Hi All - some (freezing) fun at the beach today. The tide had just gone out and there was a narrow strip of awesome patterns in the sand. This post has two pairs - each has a color and black and white. I'd love to hear if one version works better as well as overall feedback. There are more to come!
Very interesting Ruth. I prefer the B&W, they almost look like abstract images of branches.
Great find, I have tried these types of images myself and failed to get anything close.
Thanks Alan! I was hoping these would work. I also have many from over the years but this is the first batch i thought were worth sharing. I have a few more ill run by the group. I didnt want to post to many at once! Thanks again.
I hate to disagree with Alan, but I think the color adds something. As I've mentioned before, my wife has accused me of being a B&W photographer shooting in color (see today's posting for clarification of this) so I may have some personal bias in this regard.
Thanks Andrew. I get what your wife means! I was sure id like the black and white better too but im on the fence! Thanks!
All very interesting, I feel I'm drawn to the very first one the most.
They look like etchings/carvings in granite countertops; which isn't far off actually. Very nice.
Thanks Joe!
Great shots Ruth! At first glance I thought it might be an aerial view of a river delta, and it wasn't until seeing your caption that I started to pick up on the scale. I'm having a hard time deciding whether I like the B&W or color better--and I think both are worth keeping. The B&W has more of a fine art feel, but I love that the color shots really emphasize the "river delta" effect for me--"the universe in a single atom" if you will.
I don't think I helped you decide between the two versions at all (your welcome!), but curious to see what other folks think.
Thanks Josh! I always appreciate your thiughts!
Hey Ruth, I would say number one.For some reason it gives me a way to think the picture over. If you didn't mention what it was I would of guessed that it was bacteria under a microscope.
But hey, I don't live at the beach....
Hey Paul - thanks for the feedback! Ironically, it could have been bacteria as I'm a botanist and love stuff like that! ;)
As a dyed-in-the-wool colour fan, Ruth it's the colours for me, especially as they are such attractive delicate hues. In fact, the very kind of thing that might motivate me to make an image of something in the first place. Nice flow in the first composition in particular, with those big diagonal sweeps. Overall, it's line ball between the two colour images. This series typifies why mono can seem depressing in its greyness to me.
Vive la couleur! Le mono est mort. (OK, I made that one up.)
Don't make me laugh and spit out my coffee! I agree though. The color ones are resinating with me too. Unexpectedly too. :)
I actually like both and feel they have different qualities.
I have to admit that the color looks great against a black background :-)
BTW Ruth, on second look I'm seeing a white blemish the the last two you could fix (top, left of center).
That is actually a shell and I went back and forth about getting rid of it. I think I will as it distracts from the abstract nature of the image. What do you think now that you know what it is?
I wondered that myself but couldn't make it out.
I don't think it adds anything to the picture (or the story you are trying to convey?) so would personally take out.
