Ferns - Color or Black and White?

While a common subject, I do love them! These were taken in low light and a little breeze. The fiddleheads only last for such a brief period though that it is 'take (the shot) or leave it!"

I am wondering if you have a preference for color or black and white?

I personally prefer the color.

Beautiful shots! I thought I liked the black and white until I got to the color one. Color is my choice, especially the last two.

Though the black and whites are very nicely done, the first and third colored ones with the green fern and brown blackground, wow.

I personally prefer the first and third B&W ones in B&W with the other one in color.

All are fine images in their own right, but the colour is so beautiful, it's a shame to lose it in my opinion, Ruth. But I'm an avowed sucker for colour in general.

Not to bang on forever about Karl Blossfeldt, but I think the ferns might work better against a pale or white background, like his famous series.

Hi Ruth. for me both has its own charm.
BW prompts me to experiment more with contrast. the texture of leaves invite to even try reverse, of course if you do not want to restrict.
Colour. found image 4 interesting with low saturation and contrsting colour background highlight (though quite subtle). this can be elaborated if you choose to.
cheers.

I saw this today while out, thought of this post and had to take a shot and share. :)

Ferns are a never ending source of subjects for me. Aren't they beautiful? Great bokeh in this shot!!!

Really nice job here, Joe! In all respects. Well done. Don't you dare gatecrash one of my posts! Steal my thunder... ;-)

Hah thanks! I didn't mean to gatecrash though (I know your just teasing).. Just caught up in the moment and had ferns on the mind when I saw it.. I blame Ruth. :)

Against the flow I think but I am a big fan of ferns in BnW. I think it is the the structure of the plant, especially pre opening that provides so much interesting plant architecture and the shades and tones highlight the form. I tend to get lost in colour as an added dimension and lose sight of how it is engineered. I really like the first shot.

Never heard it call a fiddle head but how apt!

Thanks Mike! I also like the first one!!

Thanks to everyone for the feedback!!
