Water Abstracts

Here are some more abstract photos of water under various lights. They were actually taken before the Dolphin show at the local zoo, but I rather like some of them. I haven't added them to my portfolio before, but thanks to this group, I'm becoming more confident with the more unconventional photos I've taken in the past. I'd welcome any kind of critique you all have.

I really like the first two. The last three aren’t as drawing to me.

Thank you! Any reason why?

The first two have such a great variation of color, but the last three, manly last two, have little contrast between them. I just like the way the colors in 1&2 play together, rather than the same color in different shades.

I agree with Chloe. The first two are really strong, the third is not as strong, and the last two fall a bit behind IMO.
The reason for my opinion: It's the colour contrast. In the first image you have the blue contrasting the orange (complementary) going into the violet. Very strong yet harmonic.
In the second image the contrast between the yellow and the violet is also complementary.
From the third picture on its tone in tone, thus feels a bit more "mushy".
At the same time, the small patterns on the water become more of a distraction - barely noticed them in the first two pictures.
That being said, I really like the first three ones, as well as I admire the creativity to come up with such a concept while on a visit to the zoo :-)

Thank you very much for your time! I hadn't taken the time to consider the way the colors worked together when I took it, and to be honest, little thought went into taking them in the first place. I think now that affected the turnout more than I would have liked. Now that you mentioned the "tone on tone" look of the last few images, I think that pinpointed the issue with them. My initial thought was to highlight the small patterns, but it didn't turn out as well. Thank you again for your words.

Hi Mattew. All the versions has charm of its own. Among all those, cool colour combnations in 3, 4, 5 appealed most to me individually. cheers

Thank you for your kind words! I am glad to hear you liked those last few.

Hi Matthew,

I think the first two work best like Chloe. This is due to color theory which can be really important in abstracts - particularly ones that are entirely color driven like these. The first two images are predominantly complimentary colors (purple and yellow) which tend to work better in this color-based subject in my opinion. They provide contrast in both depth of color and cool/warm tones. This creates a complex image. The last ones are harmony colors (blue and purple) which can really bring out shadows and texture in a more straight forward subject but don't provide enough contrast in these.

This is just my opinion and an attempt to answer you question to Chloe about "why the top two". My guess is that Chris, who loves blues, will love the harmony of the last ones. This is the great part about art!

:)

Thank you very much! I think every time I post on this group I learn something new!
