The "Almost" Shot

This is your chance to share the image you love but that has issues. I'm sure we all have images that we are bummed because they are totally awesome ..... almost. They are the ones that we want to post but don't because we know that they are not quite there. But we also can't delete them because we really like them or see the potential. I invite everyone to take this opportunity to add a photo to the comments that they have wanted to share but held back because you already know it has issues but you love it anyway.

Let's just have some fun and feel free to add and comment as long as you like!

With wildlife there are ohh so many "near hits" that just miss by a pinch!

With this one the framing is bad and even with this crop, that's removing a giant tree trunk, the yellow warbler is looking out of frame and closer then I'd like on the left hand side of the frame.

Taken on the Z6 with 200-500mm; with morning Golden Hour just hitting this branch moments earlier.

I've only had minimal experience with wildlife, but I have definitely experienced this kind of miss with wildlife, especially birds.

This is exactly what I had in mind. Soooo close. What a beautiful bird too! These near hits are fun to see though.

I square-cropped it and tossed it on instagram... But yeah, soooo close. :)

I didn't realize there were so many different Warblers out there, so far this year I think I got 4 or 5 different ones. A "Yellow", "Yellow Rump", "Pine", and a, I thought "Virginia" but I think I'm mistaken on that one.. Looks like a Pine but with Red on the Head.

I Printed my "Pine Warbler" at 16 by 24 inches, just stunning print.

I was experimenting with the sun the other day, and I really love these photos. I have another photographer I work closely with though, and he wasn’t thrilled with them. I went ahead and didn’t post them because I wasn’t sure about them anymore. I took both these about an hour and a half before sunset.

Hey - the first one is so close! I get where you are coming from. This is really nice! I bet if you cropped out the top right corner I think it would be a winner!

Oh my goodness. This is an awesome idea, but I fear I will face crippling indecision. I have so many like this from when I was starting out in photography, and even quite a few from more recently. I'll follow Chloe's example and post two. I can't wait to see everybody's work.

Image number one is one I really enjoy, but I just missed the focus on the Turtle's face.

Image Two has a composition issue because I missed the lower portion of his legs. I love the look of passion on his face though.

Now I think the basketball shot is great! If his whole body was there I don't think the expression on his face would draw as much attention. Put this one in the win pile!

Thank you so much! This one spent a brief tenure on my portfolio page, but it wouldn't garner any votes, and I wasn't happy with it myself, so I took it down. I may go back and re-edit it one of these days.

Hey Ruth!

I did an edit of the shot that I really enjoy. Thanks to you and Joe for putting that thought into my head. Here it is, and it's no longer the "almost" shot.

I agree with Ruth on the Sports shot... but I know Sports shots are extremely difficult.. Last Fall I shot for a local soccer league of children under the age of 12.. (I don't share images of children, and handed over all the files).. But yea, they never stop moving, and sometimes randomly! Of course youd never catch any player this old sitting in their chair upside-down.. haha..

Thank you for your kind words. I was shooting for my high-school yearbook with their Tamron 70-200mm F/2.8. That's a lens I could get used to. I want to take soccer pictures one of these days, but I ref and play for our local league, so I never get the chance to be a photographer.

This was shot with many odds. The direction of light was major one. yet there is something I like which prevents me to discard it.

Here is a nature shot that I want to love but it is is just off focus. I've been trying to catch a swallow on the wing for years but they are so fast! This one was so close!

This one is so close! I really enjoy the colors and composition of the shot. The reflection adds something to it as well.

Are these the little guys that are super fast over ponds and rivers? This way, that way, up down and back.. my poor camera can't decide what to do to lock on! heh. Man they are fast; your shot is better then I've gotten thus far.

Just checked your shot with a few of mine, similar bird but no forked tail-feathers. Hum...

I’m really looking for feedback on my work.

The following are my thoughts and direction (visually) on this image, just my thoughts and direction, nothing more.

Brought back in some of the tones and "whites" and sharpened up the main subject a little. I really like shots like these though, a main subject flower surrounded by bokeh.

Hi Tyree,. Like Joe, I think you need to bring up the exposure/whites. The image is just too dark. However, going with Joe's example, I do love the antique look and feel of the image.

Here are two more "misses" taken yesterday at a local Dam. These are not five star images, by far, but They would of been better if they "hit".

First image, autofocus systems are challenged in this type of situation - shooting thru deep grass at 500mm. I just missed focus even trying to dial it is manually. Focus peeking was showing contrast and focus, guess it was wrong.

Second image, finally get focus to get photo-bombed by people. Not saying anything I was waving to them to get out of the shot... Instead they stood there, then looked at the geese, stood there more, thought about it a moment, then just started to walk forward... geese go back into the water... They walk by asking if I got any good shots... I felt like saying, yeah but you stood in my shot.. haha.. but I didn't, I was good and wished them a nice day. I can probably edit them out, at least they are in the tree line.
