Hunter Chan's picture

I'm not quite sure about this......

I did an edit today, and I've grown numb on this photo since I've been working on it a lot, so I am afraid that I made the wrong judgments while editing. Can anybody tell me if there are stuff wrong with this photo? Any help would be most appreciated! A BIG THANKS beforehand!

Stuff wrong? That I can't answer as it is artistic expression. :)

I'd say though, if going for a repeating pattern without a central focus, I'd go a little lighter on the vignette.

Attached is just my thoughts nothing more that might spark some more creative flow. Straightened the lines and applied a LUT in photoshop (foggynight).

This might be one of those photos you may have to revisit several times.Very interesting building though, what's its function?

I'm really thinking 1950s with this building for some reason, so perhaps that style of edit?

I thought it over for a day or so, Joe, and I decided that I would go with the lightened vignettes.
P.S. That is my school building 😂

Love the open air concept for the hallways; I don't see that in my area at all for architecture. :)

Yeah......It's pretty hard to get a photo of my school building empty! :-D

This image calls to my mind film simulations such as you find in software and on cameras & phones these days, Hunter. If I saw this image elsewhere, I'd assume it was from faded E6 or C41 originals.

Much as I loved my Kodachrome, I've never looked back since going digital, so this retro appeal doesn't work for me, as regards the quirky colour palette - I just see unpleasantly distorted reality..However, good images aren't necessarily pretty, either so I wouldn't criticise your creative intent..

I would think of doing what Joe's done with regard to geometry, but in doing this I think it has to be pretty well perfect to work, and while Joe has straightened the verticals, there is still waviness in the lines due to lens distortion. I suspect the original was from a phone or a zoom, or an old wide-angle prime, as there is complex "moustache" distortion which simple software fixes for pincushion or barrel distortion won't fix. It can be ameliorated by using Liquify or Warp tools. I've tried to do so in this edit. Joe may well tease me back for making invisible changes, after I've teased him for that myself!

However, distortion and grunge can work, and ultimately - it's YOUR image!

Very keen eye! I checked the original just to see if I introduced it by accident, it is extremely subtle but there. Though, through what I did, amplified it.

... and here I thought you would of pointed out the cloned-in the columns on the far left and right; a part of the reconstruction of missing pieces after the straitening process. :)

I realised you must have done something, Joe. I don't use PS, but thought its "Content Aware Fill" may have been smart enough to do it for you.

I gave "content aware" on this job a participation trophy. It normally dose well but this time, not so much, so I just did it quickly myself. heh
