In the Round, 2nd Attempt

Hello,

I posted last week a cherry blossom tree that was my first attempt at trying the "in the round" technique. I got some decent results and couldn't wait to try again. This time I did it with a tree that's right outside of my house. It's not the most ideal subject with the road and houses but the light was so nice I couldn't resist. I think this one came out pretty good considering it's only the 2nd time I've tried it. Definitely having a lot of fun with this and I think I'm starting to kind of get the hang of it.

Nice. I like the the other one with the white tree as well.

I liked your yellow bug images as well. I cannot comment there because I have not joined the group, and it seems there is little activity there so I may not join.I have been doing some macro lately. I was thinking about the Laowa 100 2x. but no AF. You said you took a lot of images to get some in focus and that is a little disappointing, I have a hard enough time just holding the camera steady. I have the Canon 100 non L no IS, I was thinking of upgrading to the L version but it to is only 1:1 but it does have IS and AF but it appears not as sharp as the old one and the RF version one has focus issues. I guess for now I practice with what I have. You have some great images in your portfolio.

Thank you! Yeah some of the groups here don’t get a lot of activity. This group probably has the most. The laowa lens is great it’s just a little difficult to use. I’ve also read that AF isn’t super useful for macro anyway? It can be a challenge to keep the camera still but when you get a good one it’s worth it. The laowa lenses are not super expensive either. I wouldn’t let it not having AF detour you if you want a decent lens at a great price.

I guess I have been spoiled by Canon R5. The AF locks on and holds to the eyes of animals and most of the shots are in focus on the eyes. It is not as good with insect eyes especially if they are not round , in cases where it cannot see the eyes I use spot focus and it usually in focus. I have only been shooting butterflys as of late so I don't know how well it does on other insects (I was considering buying a pet jumper spider, but they should start appearing soon out in the wild). I have even put the Raynox DCR-250 2.5x filter AND a Kenko 1.4 teleconverter and the R5 still will grab focus using spot focus as long as there is enough light (I use Flashpoint MF-12 macro flash with has led lights to help with AF) in my testing in the studio. I have not tested this combination outside on insects yet though. The Canon 100L has IS which works with inbody IS and maybe purchasing some extension tubes.. I thought that might help and was considering it over the Laowa, I am sure the Laowa 100 has better IQ at 2x because it is native and it is less expensive new than a use Canon 100L. So again, I may stick with what I have for right now. Who knows, I may quickly tire of macro but it doesn't seem like it

I think it came out really well too. I look forward to seeing more of them. Another subject to read up on (In the Round). The colors here are beautiful.
