Grass Fields

The sun was setting just perfectly over a "Meadow in the Making" at a house in our neighborhood. I really like how they turned out. Now that I'm looking at them again, I think the second one should be cropped more towards the large stalk on the left. I love the neutral tones and the halos of light around the grass heads.

Great job Jennifer! I love the lines, colors and texture.

Thanks Dean. I think the vertical lines are what I like most too.

The backlighting is great. I kinda like the second one better but I'm not too crazy about the background.

Hi Charles, What don't you like about the background? Do you think it's too much glare? I like how Alan edited it below. After posting it and stepping back a little, I realized it's just not cropped in a visually appealing way. Hope you are well and thank you!

The fascinating part is the backlit grass. The background has too much dynamic contrast so it pulls the eye away from the grass and makes you wonder, what is it? Plus the pattern is not that interesting. Either the background should be equal as the subject or should be innocuous, not distracting.

I've had many photos where the background distracts from the subject. That's what separates a great photo from a merely interesting one. Of course, that's not necessarily an either/or situation. It's a thousand shades of gray so to speak.

The lighting of the grass is amazing, regardless.

Thank you, Charles, for clarifying. I like to hear exactly what people have to say in order for me to think through things more carefully. I appreciate it!

Interesting concept Jennifer. I love the creativity behind these.

Like Charles I have concerns over the background in the 2nd, namely the light areas that draw the eye away from the foreground.
I have played around with cropping to help minimize and balance, just to use as a comparison.

Thanks for sharing!

You're definitely correct on the background being the issue. Your crop really made a difference. Maybe also dulling down that bokeh in the right upper corner a bit. I liked the first one so much that I didn't pay as much attention to the second; but after seeing your crop, I like it a lot more!

Hello Jennifer,

Thank you for your comment on my photo. Sorry, but by the time I got to it the reply button was greyed-out. So I have popped a reply here.

It was the top photo here that inspired me to post mine. I saw this and thought" wow, that's really nice". Really good photos on your site too.

Thank you, Charles! I appreciate your comments. Hope you are well and enjoying your summer!
