Dormant Trees Motion Blur

Hello Everyone! After a walk at a local lake, I came home with a lot of images with tree about which I couldn't get excited. Instead of deleting them, I set them aside, then decided to play with them using PS's motion blur and Camera Raw Filter installed filters. Here are 3 that I thought turned out pretty okay.

PS Motion Blur, 90degrees @200
Camera Raw filters - spring04 and PD4

At the time, I was focusing on the reflections with these images in order to have a few reflection photos to experiment with in PS. While using the motion blur/CR filters on them, I wished I had panned up a bit to get more balance on top and bottom. Otherwise I like the result.

Hope all is well in your parts of the world!

Ha, you fooled me here Jenny - my first impression is that you had been out shooting ICM!
I love your results - they take what is essentially a mundane scene and convert it into to something abstract.

I have seen this technique used in part by many photographers, (example by Chris Friel below) creating images by blending blur/no blur layers. I have also used this myself to some degree.

Should anyone want to know more about the base technique (and how it compares to real-life ICM) I have an old primer on this on my website.

For those willing to put aside their 'pure photography' morals it is quite enjoyable adding a motion blur layer to an 'almost' image and blending to create something new.

You're right, Alan, on how trying out PS effects on almost images is very enjoyable .... the guide that you posted the link to is actually what put the idea in my head way back when I read it to try out motion blur as well as other PS features .... as for shooting ICM - AFTER coming home and looking at the photos, I frustratingly asked myself why the heck I didn't think of it while there! I guess it's a photographer's bane, and I do it all the time to my frustration - focus so much on what I want to do at the moment, I forget or miss all else. Lately I've been trying to consciously remind myself while out, but it's a conscious thing so hopefully it'll become second nature ... Chris Friel does amazing work. I was just on his website. Thanks for the recommendation.

The third one is my personal favorite Jennifer. It has a dreamy quality and a nice color palette.

Thank you, Gordon. I appreciate you taking time to comment. I do like the color palette in 3 the most as well. Hope you are well!

Hello Jennifer

What a great idea! I have about 100,000+ photos that didn't make the cut, so if you'd like to cull through them and practice some more...let me know.

My person favorite the the first one. While I "normally" prefer odd-numbers, I like the edit on that one the best. Thank you for posting!

100,000! Jeesh! Do you ever go back to them and play around at all or do you just keep moving forward? I don't know how you would have time anyway because you're always trying new and cool ideas all the time. I hate going through piles of digital photos because I end up second guessing myself on whether to keep or not all the time. I normally end up just deleting. Thanks for the comment too. Just curious -what is it about odd numbers that you like?

My wife had a Garden Design and Maintenance business (installing and maintaining gardens) and I would assist when time allowed. (I do not miss raking wet leaves)

I learned that she would plant the Focal Point as one plant or in Three. This would draw you eye to the center as apposed to Two where your eye wasn't drawn specifically to either.

Thank you for the explanation. Another useful piece of information, and I appreciate it!
