As I get older, my eyesight makes critical focus a challenge in some circumstances. As I'm discovering AF is not always automatic or focused, I need to use MF in many portraits. Plus, I just purchased a Zeiss lens, so AF is not possible for that lens. I was considering going tethered to a laptop for my portrait sessions, when I discovered a series of small video monitors such as the Atomos line. Can these be used to check critical focus? is this a slower way to shoot, or is tethered just a better option?
i think a lot of studio photographers shoot tethered, i don't suppose it's much slower than checking your lcd after the shot ... i don't shoot manually much in recent years as the AF on my newer cameras are pretty reliable. usually focus peaking and magnification in my EVF is enough for me on the occasions where i manually focus
