Sahardid Abdillahi's picture

First timer

Camera: Panasonic S1
Lens: Sigma 105mm
Lights: Parabolic + Beauty dish + Octa box

This was for a friend of mine that has beauty shop mainly focussed on the eyes. This my first time shooting 'beauty', but I tried to make the best of it. The communication didn't go so well, because she was under the impression that it was going to be a test shoot. So there was no make-up artist and one of the girls didn't bring a strapless shirt (Photoshopped it in one picture).

Hope to get some feedback :)

(there is a lot of headspace because I didn't want to get the clothes in the picture (that's why I missed the hands :(

These look pretty decent especially for a first go at beauty. The main things I see that you may want to consider is that the skin tone is very saturated and heavily orange. Also, I'd lift the shadows just a tiny bit, and give the highlights a bit of a pop. They look ever so slightly under exposed as they are now. For what it's worth, shooting down on people (second image) usually doesn't turn out great for beauty - it's almost always better - note I said almost always - to shoot at or below their eye line, which lengthens the neck and creates separation from the face and the chest/shoulders. The third image is a good example of this for the girl on the left. The girl on the right would maybe have been better served by having her face less tilted towards the model with her chin pushed toward the camera; a similar effect could be had by having the model tilt her chin in towards the other model and just barely touching the side of her face or forehead to the other model's chin. This might help to alleviate the cut-off feeling of her face as well. Also for what it's worth, the first image feels like an outtake - aside from the cut off (and goofy) hands of the first girl, the other models' faces are at odd angles and they look uncomfortable. Hope this helps!

Oh wow, I didn't think anyone would respond. Thank you for the feedback. I can't do much about the posing right now. Maybe starting off with just one model would have been easier?!
I'll have to take a look at the exposure and see how much I can push it. Is it okay to have to highlights blown out?
And the skin tones are always something I struggle with.
I don't know if this is any better though.
