These are my first attempts at portraits. After watching the YouTube videos of people critiquing images I knew this was the only way to step up my game.
Note: I have just recently got into photography so these are my only attempts at portraits. I came from shooting more river and creek landscapes while fishing in Boone NC.
I know none of these are portfolio worthy, but any tips to improve will be appreciated.
1,2,7 & 8 has a lot of potential. Keep it up!
Thank you! In 7 I just noticed the blacks were crushed way to much and it lost the detail in the hair and the sleeves.
Play around with multiple copies of the same image with different adjustments. Then choose the best one that works for you stylistically. Nowadays, specially on instagram, crushing blacks or not becomes a style choice so it will all depend on you. You can crush the blacks as little or as much you want if that works for you. If these were a product or a commercial shoot or business portrait session then you would need all or most of the detail on your captured image as much as you can, but if you're going for an artistic portrait look and feel which seems to be the case in your images, then that's a totally different because it would all depend on what you would like to see.
Yeah I was definitely going for more of an artistic portrait look. I will definitely play around more with my camera setting as well. I think these images were taken with a 50mm F1.8 Iso was between 100-300. I haven’t perfected the ISO and exposure just yet. It’s something I really need to work on an research a little more.
