Mike Kelleys Tutorial

Hi Group,

I had just wondered if anyone had purchased Mike Kelley's tutorials on here at F-Stoppers. I am sure they are top notch, but I am wondering if they are a little outdated, I know some of these were done years ago and from what I remember hearing he shoots a lot more natural light stuff now. Just wondering if anyone has purchased these and if they are worth the money. Any feedback from the group would be appreciated as I am trying to take my game to the next level. Thanks.

Hey!
I personally love them, but you are right, he goes really in with a lot of gear. Where have you heard that he shoots more available light now? And for what reason? For time-efficiency or for aesthetic reasons?

Hi Matthias, thank you for the information. Yes the gear thing is a little bit of a concern, but as he mentioned in one of the tutorials (well actually more of an advertisement for the tutorial which was about 10 minutes long) you can achieve high quality architectural images even with pretty basic gear. So this is not a major concern for me, plus there are always rental options for really high end stuff. But I heard this comment I believe on one of the near hour long photo/contest reviews that he was recently on, which is much more recent than the tutorials themselves. I would hope that they would go and reshoot one of these to how his current workflow is.

Hey,

I have all three of them but have only watched the first one and half of the second. They are great tutorials but and can help you learn a lot of new tricks, but you are right, they are a little outdated especially if you compare the images he makes in them compared to the shots he does now. Saying that though the images he teaches you to take are still very good and would defiantly still work in today's market.

Depending on your knowledge of light painting and photoshop I would maybe think of missing out the first one as it is quite basic.

Thanks so much Alexander, yes this is exactly what I needed to know about the first one, it seems like I could skip this one all together. Yes I believe that the images taken using the workflow via the tutorials will provide superb images, as this is what he was delivering to clients years ago, so I imagine they are still very relevant and high quality if you follow his techniques. But I think you are right that they are a little outdated (5 plus years ago). As far as editing goes and light painting, I have the concepts down, just need more practice on this. Thanks again for the response.

Glad I could help Eric, as I said they are really great long tutorials (30 hours ish) so they take a while to get through but theres a lot of info in there!

Also apart from my 24mm canon tiltshift lens all my other gear is pretty basic (yongnuo flash, crappy tripod, wi-fi to my ipad) you can still follow along with his high end gear and get nearly the same exact results!
