I was on business in Quebec, and brought a rangefinder 35 mm camera with me, plus some B&W film (Contax iia; Voigtlander SC Skopar 21mm f4; Ilford FP4+, a very compact travel kit). I finished my last appointment and had a few hours to spare before I needed to go to the airport in Montreal. I stopped in at the Old Port, walked around and got a lot of nice shots. I walked up this street as a short-cut, and saw the guy sitting under the fire escape, and my photographically inclined neural network started signalling "classic street shot". Basically I set the camera as I approached, pivoted gently, quick focus, 90 degree turn and click. It turned out to look like a lot of old classic street shots.
I like it, I would maybe like it more if the lowest left to right line was parallel with the base of the image. A rotation to the right a few degrees, I suppose. Maybe even bring up the shadows on the lone figure a bit as well.
HI Mike. Thanks!
Since it was a street shot, I snapped it quickly. I probably could have walked 10-20' more and got things parallel. As to the shadows- it is film, and I guessed at the exposure (I had a meter with me, but wanted to capture the moment). The shot is a little underexposed, and I lost some shadow detail.
Learning point for me - I assumed digital. Unless you have a darkroom to edit or take a digital shot post development and then work on it in lightroom etc, then post shoot editing may be tough - it stands as a good shot either way.
