Hello All

Hello,

I have been a part of this group for a short time now and decided that it's time to jump in. I currently do automotive photography as a hobby, but hope to move into the business world here soon. I have been doing it one year now, as of July.

I would love to hear what you think of the photos that I post!

Thanks,
Stephen

Hi Stephen!

Cool concept for this shot. I like the idea of the tail lights reflecting off the wall to add a hinted back light. Good photo!

Here's some things that I would like to point out:
• Your lighting is uneven on the hood.
• There is loss of detail in the grill, including a disappearing emblem.
• I'm not sure why the running lights are on, but not the headlights.
• The horizon (wall) is slanted.

Overall, this image is good, just needs minor tweaks to make it great!

Hi Sam,

Thanks for your feedback! To reply to your comments:

1. Lighting is a bit uneven, but I generally like it to be brighter towards the front to show the source of light. While I agree that it should be a bit darker, the light would naturally be brighter towards the source, unless the source we straight up.
2. Not sure what loss of detail you're referring to. The grill fades to black specifically, because I don't like absolutely every part of the car lit. You'll have to just point out what you mean by loss of the emblem.

3. Driving lights are on, because both the owner and myself liked the look of them versus the headlights. I can post the headlight pic below.

4. The horizon wall is indeed slanted, because we were at the edge of a sloped parking garage. I didn't want to fight getting that fixed for the picture, so I left it how it was.

I think it ultimately comes down to preference on a lot of these changes. I do, however, appreciate your comments!

Thanks,
Stephen

Photography is, indeed, all about preferences!

To be more specific about the emblem, it appears to not be distinct enough, but you have mentioned that area is deliberately darker, so in that case, never mind! Good photo and I look forward to seeing more. ☺☻

oh, I gotcha. erm... well, the emblem isn't necessarily darker, but that whole area is. I think my main focus, when in Ps, is to make things look as natural as possible. Most automotive photos out there look absolutely unreal, but are only that way, because they have been overly faked. I do my best to make everything look like how it came out of the camera. That said, the emblem wouldn't naturally be much brighter. Maybe a little, but not much.

Again, Thanks for the input! I'm glad that we share a common interest -- as not a large population of photographers do automotive work

I think you nailed this photo man! The lighting, fading to black, and everything are spot on for me. The slight tilt of the back wall could be fixed but not a big deal. Keep up the good work!

Btw opinion might be biased as I am a mustang owner and love them haha

Thanks, Dylon! I appreciate the encouragement!

I've never followed mustangs too closely, until a friend of mine had me do this shoot. I think the 2015 is an amazing upgrade in design.

I just realized that you're the cover photo blue mustang guy...

Nice car! That blue is really a neat color!

Haha thanks man! I love it!
