Scarlet Lily beetle

Inspired by the work of others to branch out. Here's one of my first attempts at capturing a Scarlet Lily beetle, busy feasting on a Lily bud.

Suggestions for honing this particular skill?

Great first attempt! I like the composition and the exposure. Focus is a little off though, really should be on the closest eye, looks like you're just slightly behind it. Keep trying and shoot lots of shots. It takes a lot of shots to get the one where the focus hits just right.

Thanks Troy. I was actually aware of that and can appreciate those that are successful - especially on a moving subject.
More practice is needed......

If your subject is moving, don't go that close. If you are a little further away, the depth of field is slightly bigger. You probably cropping the image and than it does not really matter. Another solution could be to use a smaller aperture. What aperture, shutter speed and ISO you used?

I like the image and the colors. ;)

Most of the advice I've received on this type of photography is if you are photographing an insect, the best option is to always get the face in focus.

I have some really great pictures of the backside of bugs, but as I said, it doesn't really fly with macro.

You don't have to have a macro lens for it, but it helps. You can use extension tubes on a wide angle lens which will assist in getting closer. Aperture between f8 and f22 will help with dof in this type of photography, but depending on lighting that can be difficult to accomplish at f22 or higher.

I just received my speedlight and will be going out tomorrow for some new pictures even though there is a massive heat wave moving through.
