Timothy Mathews's picture

Liberty Without Justice

I shot this in May of 2000 on the way back from Ellis Island.
Shot with my Pentax K1000 on Ilford colour process B/W film. It's grainier than I'd like, but I can't go back and take it again.

Other than the fact that this shows the twin towers before 9/11, there is not a lot going on here. Lady Liberty's face is in shadow, the crop is too tight on the left and right sides, the sky is uninteresting, and the horizon is tilted to the left.

The only thing that can be fixed is the horizon (and this is a pet peeve f mine because it's SO easy to fix), but I suppose the image has some sentimental value to you and that's why you shared it.

I would have suggested waiting until a different time of day to get the sun on the statues face. I would have used a wider crop to get the towers and the statue relatively closer together in the frame instead of at the extreme edges. Or move to your left to change their relationship from your viewpoint.

I'm not trying to be harsh, but if you only wanted to share a photo you made 19 years ago, then you could at least straighten the horizon. I know when I post and no one comments at all, I wonder why not, so I try to post some helpful critique when I can, even if I'm not fond of the image.

Straightened. I was shooting with a 50mm from a boat. I had no opportunity to choose what time I would be there. Today I would shoot many shots, and it wouldn't be so grainy. It wasn't the film I wanted. I prefer Tri-X.

Timothy - what matters, at least to me, is that the photo is important to you, enough to share. The photo speaks to me because of personal reasons. I like the graininess. I agree with the horizon, but I'm guilty of tilting everything. I love that you pulled a photo from 19 years ago to share - that shows it's power and what it means to you. That's why we do this.
