Dock Shot

Sorry it took so long to get around to this, it's been a rather busy week.

When it comes to dock shots, it's difficult to get a shot that really stands out, because it is not an uncommon subject, particularly for a black and white fine art style photo. Now, that's not to say docks are over-photographed, or you can't get an interesting photo using a dock, it's just difficult to get a unique shot that really stays with you.

For this photo, the placement of the dock is good, right down the middle, but I feel like the camera should be pointed a little higher towards the sky (one of the rare cases I will say "this needs more sky"). I'd almost recommend going 50/50 or close to it, in terms of dock to sky balance. Also, if possible, a longer exposure for the clouds will help make them more interesting.

I think the major problem here is the location. I like the interesting shape of the dock, but I'm not a huge fan of the wall at the end, or the boats on the sides. It's all a little busy and they don't really ad to the photo. A simple, clean location would help make a nice clean image. Alternatively, a super long exposure capturing the movement of the boats could make for a unique image.

Of course, the problem with the advice I've given is that you'll end up with something extremely similar to what everyone else does. It's hard to say without being there, and I'm far from a composition wizard, but it may be worth trying to find a different perspective or make use of the interesting shape of the dock.

Apologize for being so verbose, I hope it helped.

Thanks for the advice. Where I live there isn't another dock near me. I'm also just starting out in photography so I don't have a tripod yet for long exposures.
