Pushing my gear to the limit

I've heard many times that shooting against the sun it's not recommended but i decided to do it anyway. To my surprise the dynamic range of my D7000 it's waaay higher that nikon would ever care to admit and using just a speedlight in front of my subject i've managed to get this shoot. Let me know what do you think about it

Nice shot - really nice - but I don't see any reason to think the DR was astonishing.

Well, yes. Part of the point of using flash was to reduce dynamic range in the shot.

it seems quite high to me since in on the back of my camera the lower left part looked totally black and i was able to recover a lot of details

That's a different thing - it's about the limits of your camera's screen and the brightness level you have it set to. Typically, they're not great devices!

If you're going to take this type of shot a lot then you might want to diy a saber strip -

- Relatively easy to carry and less vulnerable to wind than an umbrella, softer light than un-modded flash.

@david i might love my ocotbox too much to switch it for a lightsaber, but nice tip

Lovely balance between ambient and flash. I dig it!

I routinely shoot against the sun. Who doesn't recommend this?! Just have to stay on top of the flare, which a careless photographer may sometimes place in a really distracting location- it's usually easy to retouch out anyway. I think you did a nice job here. I may have used a slightly higher angle on the strobe to mimic a streetlight.

According to the DXO testing the D7000 have an Dynamic range of 13.87 EV at ISO 83 ( nikon 100 )
Light Dynamic Range is the measurement that tells you how wide is the differential from brightest luminance to darknest luminance for any given image sensor of a photo or video capturing device ,
as a point of comparison the human eye have a Dynamic Range of 20 or 1,000,000:1 , your white balance is not my cup of tea but nice shoot, D7000 is a good rig, Max

And according to everyone else it's more like 11...

under controlled lab conditions ?

No. Everyone else points the camera at a different random object each time and guesses...

LOL!! you owe me a keyboard
