Elliot Mason's picture

New member looking for critique

I have recently got back into photography after a somewhat rocky history. I took photography for a year at school before dropping it in favour of art. I took my dad's Nikon FM2 to Thailand when I was 18 only to have it stolen by a monkey. I was as a bit traumatised by this and left photography alone for a while. Eventually I got my own Nikon F65 film camera in my early 20's only to loose interest in photography as work and other interests crowded things out. I have had a few point a shoot cheapo camera for recording snapshots over the years and then of course smartphone cameras.

I live in Sierra Leone where my wife and I have been for 7 years. A friend visited about 2 years ago and I was really impressed by the pics he took while he was here. I didn't even know what camera he had but the images got me doing some research. I decided on a Sony Nex and was happy with it and it's kit lens but was thinking of getting some new lenses for it when the opportunity came up to get a second hand A7ii. I have had it for a few months and personally am very happy with the camera, the lens and the images coming out of it.

What I really need to know now is how I, the photographer, can improve. I would appreciate any comments about lighting, composition, camera settings. I don't yet have a speedlight so the photos are all with natural light.

I am struggling to upload images and have failed to post on a few occasions now so will try to add images after :-)

Ok here are some images - thanks

I think they are simply great!,keep shooting!

My first suggestion would be to pay a little more attention to what is behind your subject, and if you can't reposition them, try to move yourself to minimize distractions.
