Jeena Paradies's picture

Scene from a horror movie

I got new light modifiers where I can direct the light from the speedlightsmuch more specific. I'm still making mistakes with the aperture and shutterspeed. But that was the best picture from the session.

I'm always stressed during a shoot with speedlights in comperrison with natural lights because with them I can't say "yeah the light was bad at this time" because now I'm responsible for that too.

Any tipps to get rid of that anxiaty other than the obvious "spend more time with speedlights"? because I don't want to waste my models time.

The disadvantage of speedlights is the lack of a modeling light. I also use speedlights a great deal and am working on a better way to direct the light exactly where I want it. This looks like you used a round snoot on his face and hit mostly his chin. Have you ever thought of using a piece of gaff tape to give you a rectangular area of light? I love how the old black and white movies would use a light to show just the eyes or the top part of the face for this type of image. I made some modifiers that give rectangular and square areas of light. I still have difficulty getting them aimed exactly where I want them.
I really like the model's expression and the hammer gives an edge to his fear.

Oh I didn't think of using gaff tape, but it's a great idea because it's so much easier to work with than some cardboard cut out which I tried in a different shoot, I'll try that, thanks! And I agree, a rectangular light would be so much more logical in this situation.
