I did a profile shoot for a Writer and used some books as a prop for several shots.
Shot at location in a tight room with lots of furniture. The low key lighting took away the clutter and added some mystery.
I am not sure if the books add to this shot. Here are 2 crops with and without, please let me know what would be your preference.

I like the portrait better without, although I suppose the books being there makes it seem more "writerly". The metallic shine of the books is distracting. I would also prefer this to be less underexposed - about a stop brighter or so, it would still be "low key" - and possibly slightly less red in his skin. The color is just personal preference though.
