Along with being a full-time photographer, my wife Eliza and I own two hair salons in Vancouver. More and more hair is becoming a passion of mine (I don't style hair, that would be bad). I do, however, get to organize hairstyling photoshoots and I love it! I am starting to get published in hairstyling magazines and starting to work with bigger hair brands.
Finding Hair Models can be hard because signed models are not allowed to just change their hair color any time they want. So we often use our clients. My favorite thing about my job is I get to take regular people and turn them into real hair models! I love watching how confident people who have never done a professional photo shoot are when they are done. It makes my day!
For these shots, I shot with a beauty dish right above to camera and a reflector directly below the camera creating a clamshell lighting set up.
Shot on a Canon 5Ds with a 70-200mm f/4 with a 3 stop ND filter so I could shoot at f/4 and get some shallow depth of field.
Who else is into hairstyling?
Wow excellent work!!! I love shooting hair and have done a couple of NAHA entries (one was even nominated which was a huge surprise). These are gorgeous photos. The only change I'd make is the hand and arm in the first photo blocks a lot of her hair and kind of takes me out of the mood since it's also a bit large due to foreshortening. But that's just a tiny nitpick. The third and fourth images are my favorites. :)
Awesome, thanks for the feedback! I agree, for a hair photo, the arm is a distraction, but there is something intriguing about it. Both the stylist and I picked it as our favorite, so that was the one haha! I want to take photos for NAHA, just have to organize myself. Good for you though! That's wicked!
These are excellent. Great work by everyone involved.
