Brian G's picture

It's been a while

Hey All,
New to the group. I mainly hang out in the landscape section. I haven't shot a portrait session in over 4 years. I did seniors and weddings for about 5 years before that. Well, my neighbor asked me if I would shoot their son's senior pictures and I couldn't say no. These are some of my favorite from the session. I would love to get some critique. I had forgotten how much fun senior sessions are. Thanks for any comments or critique!!

These are nice. In the first image, the hand meeting the guitar looks a little awkward and looks kind of stumpy but for the purposes of telling a story (and the light on his face) it still works. The only other thing I'd say is that the last image, the wide shot of the street or alley, seems a little superfluous. I think the story of that photo could be told in a vertical crop of him with just the brick wall, and you'd still get good background blur. As it is, the street is the brightest part of the photo (including that truck in the background) and my eye goes straight there instead of to your subject. Or you could crop in closer in a horizontal version to get rid of that back part of the alley/street and it would also look nice. Hope this helps!

Thanks a ton for the critique. I agree with all. The story behind the last one (Not common knowledge to the general public) is this alley is kind of famous locally. Just about every kid who has had senior photos done in our small town has had their picture in this alley. I also included tight crops in the album for "correctness" LOL I should have removed the truck.
