Just Dance

for this shot, i wanted to mix constant light and flash to show motion while freezing the model at the same time. I set my bare bulb xplor 600 modeling light on high camera left to capture motion. I then set up a nikon sb700 flash in a 48" soft box at 1/8 power camera right to freeze her at the end of the dance. I had to use a 2 stop filter to cut down the ambient in order to get the background to the darkness i wanted due to 2 second shutter speed and shooting outside in my front yard. the edit is more fine art style with added texture and smoke. This was captured in one shot on a black background. iso 100, 2 stop nd filter, 2sec ss, F14

For reasons that may be obvious if you visit my profile, I dig this. I really like that in the far left she is facing the opposite direction (was she twirling?). Gives the photo a more narrative quality that leads to interesting interpretation in addition to just being cool to look at.

Thanks Dave! I see why after looking at your portfolio. Lots of shutter drag shots. Very creative. She started on the left, then twirled into the pose as you suggest she did. Thanks for the comment!
