I only have the one face, so take it easy on the quality of the model!
Shot against a basic black foam core background with a Godox AD200 Pro in a MagBox for the key and a V860II with a magsphere for the fill on the right. Was holding the remote shutter release in one hand and a silver reflector panel in the other under my chin. Had to keep getting up and walking over to the camera (Don't have a laptop to tether to) to make sure I got the focus dialed and to get the lights right, but then just clicked off a bunch in a row and chose my favorite.
Shot on my X-T3 with new Viltrox 85mm f1.8 portrait lens. Think around F8 and 1/125.
I really like the mood/expression you've captured, which for me is the most important element in a portrait. Personally I would have lifted the tone on your sweater to avoid the ‘floating head’ look. From a technical viewpoint the eyes look a tad soft, but having said that it’s a fine portrait and a very fine face.
I think your look would work well with a 17th century costume. Have a look at some Dutch male portraits from around that time. I think with similar lighting, possibly a bit more Rembrandt, and a couple of props you could produce some interesting self images.
Hey, thanks for the feedback! On the shirt, I definitely see what you're saying, but the original full frame out of camera actually cropped just outside my ears and when I widened it you'd notice that my arms were cut off, so I crushed the black a bit and blended it out for something more "dramatic". I'll definitely try to frame the shoulders in all the way so I don't need to do stuff like that.
The eyes are sharp in the original, but I widened the JPEG in post and not the raw or a .tiff, so I might have lost something in the extra compression, good eye!
I'll definitely take a look at some of the old masters stuff and if I come up with anything, I'll be sure to post it!
