Kids can be tough to get a natural picture of, but it's a fun challenge! Most of the time, they see the camera and put on their worst fake smile because that's what they're taught to do. So, I wait. Get pictures of other things around, let them see the pictures and watch me taking them. Then once they start playing around the best photos are made.
This particular shot was about half an hour into a shoot at a horse farm in KY. The girl had already gone off to play, and was coming back because I was going to get some horses in a field farther out, and she wanted to follow me. All I had to do was line up the shot as she walked closer.
