Janos Lakatos's picture

Giselle, the Corpse Bride

This photo was made for promoting an upcoming dance piece, a new version of the classic Giselle. The story is about a girl who dies of heartbreak on her wedding day, and becomes one of the Vilis, the spirits of maidens who died after being betrayed by their lovers, and take revenge in the night by dancing men to death by exhaustion. I wanted to make her look ghostly but beautiful at the same time. You can also see her "ghost image" behind her, giving the photo a little extra atmosphere.

I like this very much. My only comment is the dark vertical bar on the left, for me an opaque net, something diaphanous to show her removal from life but still visible beyond the veil may have worked better.

Thank you Mike for your comment. The dark part on the left is actually a tree, because the Vilis "live" in the woods according to the story. And also that was the space for the client to put text on. :) But some veil really would have worked better.

I figured that was a space for some copy. If it were a veil, dark grey with perhaps light text or light grey with light text. All this said it is a really nice image of the artist.
