Hello Garrett. I like your top pic the best out of the set. Not certain what you had going as far as lighting was concerned, but I might suggest some more illumination across the eyes. I have no issue with the overall level of the light in the shot, but his eyes are just a bit hard to see, which is a shame IMHO, because they seem to be telling an interesting story.
Thanks Darin, we had just finished dinner and was shooting while my father was telling stories. All we had was the over head “chandelier“. If I had another lighting source where would you place it to gain the extra light on the eyes??
Perhaps a light source (table lamp?), camera-right. Something not too off axis from his nose. I don't think that you would have needed much, but a small source would have been nice here. You might be able to raise the exposure with editing.
