Butterfly and Clementines

I’ve been forced to stay indoors due to terrible weather and play with my new camera but it gave me a chance to explore with creating a still life. I think I’m hooked! I just used some clementines and a preserved butterfly and made a makeshift backdrop out of an old Halloween cloak.

F 2.8

Hi Alison, A few observations

. The fruit at the front of the image is blurred and doesn't add to the overall impression for me. Maybe make the butterfly the star and clear the image of some of the other elements. 2.8 is shallow so obviously the DoF needs to be considered.

. There are blown highlights, I presume that this may be you trying to keep the main subject lit leading to a higher exposure.

. I like the mono treatment as it removes the strong orange colour and lets the viewer focus more on the contrast of the multiple elements.

I have been through the same learning curve and I am sure you will learn from this shot. I am currently learning post shot processing in detail but have contracted with myself to put more time in the initial shot so I need less effort in the post. This may or may not help, use ofrdisregard as you see fit.

Cheers, Michael

Pretty creative. But, you forgot one detail, the legs. :) Maybe they are in shadow?

I would have tried to light the butterfly a little more. Especially, head, eyes.

I'm more drawn to the colored version.

I think a fill reflector would help the lighting.
