Problem with film scratches and marks - Any ideas?

Hi,

I just joined this group so thanks for any responses. I have recently shot a couple of rolls of Portra 160 with my Olympus SP that look bad. The camera did not have any problem previously. The film was developed by The Darkroom and I am scanning on my Plustek. The attached photo illustrates the problems with scratches and white marks which do not brush off. I scanned right side up and upside down to see if the marks were caused by dirt in the scanner but they came out the same. I am wondering if the film or canister could be defective. It was purchased recently although I no longer have the package with the expiration date on it. Any thoughts? Thanks, Colin

Hey Colin. First off, cool shot; beautiful location. Were these imperfections also visible on the scans done by The Darkroom? Do all of the rolls you had developed have the same issues? If so, it sounds like the film may have been damaged while it was being developed.

I also use The Darkroom, and while most of the rolls I've received from them look great, I have had a few where there were clearly some issues during the development process. Take a look at the example I've uploaded here. You can see a pretty severe horizontal scratch and water marks that ended up on the negative.

Hmmm.... Both rolls were developed at the Darkroom at different times. If they had a problem, one would think they would have fixed it by the time I sent the second roll. I did not have them scan the film since I have my own scanner. I can have the scanner remove most of the defects but I should not have to! I will send this photo to them and ask what is going on.

The other roll that went in at the same time was 120 so I presume different equipment. The previous film that went through this camera was Ektar and it looked great.
