Hi all, I've only ever taken photo's of one gig - I generally shoot seascapes/fine-art(esque) things but I love loud, shouty rock bands so when my friend asked me to shoot his gig I gave it a go. I've only got basic gear, a canon 1200d and the 18-55 non-is kit lens so I knew my lens (especially the AF) would struggle to keep up. I've attached two of my images from the shoot and I would really like some constructive criticism please. Thanks!
Hey man, good on you for getting stuck in to what you love. I love noise too, so can go from photographing a wedding one week (last weekend) to photographing Everytime I Die (this Friday!).
I think you've got over the first hurdle... just getting on and doing it.
The images themselves need some work, and it'll come with time. If it's a friends band you'd probably be fine using flash, so try mixing it up. Also look in to picking up a cheap fast lens, Canon do a great 1.8 for about £70.
The only advise is to keep doing it and develop your own style, it'll all come with practise.
Ha! Crazy, just went to check out your profile on here and it turns out we live in the same town :)
Hi Joe, Thanks for the critique and the advice - I've been looking at cannon's 50mm prime (my finger has been hovering over the "add to cart" button for a couple of days now! ). The internet has made this a very small/big world hasn't it? That photo was taken at The Wedgewood rooms a couple of weeks ago.
Ahhh nice! I have a love/hate relationship with the place. Got some cracking shots in the past and some abysmal ones due to horrible lighting. Keep at it boss.
Yeah mate that lighting was "challenging"! I'm shooting them again on Friday at Drift Bar on Palmeston road. Have you ever shot there?
No I haven't mate, but you'll be fine with flash and going all over the place. Was meant to play there myself but the gig got cancelled.
Is the band King Ghidora by the way as they're playing there tonight? Adem is a good buddy of mine.
My band are playing this in a couple of weeks, I'll be shooting too... should be a rager:

That's them. Simon just texted me about it being cancelled, which is a bit of pain because I'm sitting here looking at my new 40mm f2.8 prime. I may well come along to that gig to shoot it. Seems rude not to!
