Looking forward for critics. I would love to take simple pics that tell a story, or at least make you stop for a moment. Please, give me hints how to get better. Thanks!
Being new here and not ready to post my own work yet, I'm really not one to critique. My "thought" would be on the first picture, a little too much green background but it's not a critique - it's beautiful the way it is I think they're all beautiful, each in their own way. Keep doing your thing.
Hi Alex, What a fun trio of images. I love to photograph insects and tiny wildlife too. When I first started, I thought the goal was to get the closest possible and have the smallest depth of field possible as if it was the actual goal rather than to create something beautiful.
So this might me a little tough love. I mean all of this with respect and friendship.
In the first image you got off to a great start. You have the focus right on the eye where it should be. However, the depth of field is sooo tight that not a single one of the flowers is in focus. Nor even the entire face of the ant. This image would have told a story of the ant and a few flowers were in focus creating a tiny scene.
The second photo obviously has something going on for drama ;) but, as the bugs are dead center, it looks like a textbook photo of ladybug sex. If it was off center and little more of the surrounds were in focus, again, it would be a scene.
The third photo is nice but again, the depth of field is too tight and some of the crab's face is out of focus. Step back and make the goal more than just getting as close and tight as possible.
So, bottom line, you are off to a great start. Just think a little more about creating a story if you want your photos to tell a story.
Hi, Ruthie! I was off the blog wor a while and just saw your response. Thanks you so much for giving me tips on what exactly I need to pay attention. I’ll definitely keep them in mind and hopefully come up with better photos. Thanks! :)

Thanks a lot for taking the time to write the response! :) I was thinking the same, it’s just green and somehow empty.
