Here in New Zealand we are home to the rarest gull species on earth with only around 3000 individuals left. The Black-billed Gull or Tarapuka in the Maori language is New Zealand's only endemic gull and resides predominantly on braided rivers.
However a colony of around 300 has recently popped up in a very unlikely place. Right in the middle of the city center in the remains of a very large building that was destroyed in the tragic Christchurch earthquakes almost 10 years ago. The only part of the building left are the half demolished fenced-off and flooded foundations providing a perfect predator free space for nesting.
