I am not a wildlife photographer but maybe a bigger lens to get more Nuthatch and less background? Could just be me but it seems the subject is kind of small.

That was 600mm. ;) I would like to get closer to him actually. But sometimes I want to show the surrounding habitat as well.

wow, I only get up to 250 at the moment. I know that some birds are pretty fast at leaving when we move toward them. I have read that leaving food out that they eat will put them in the right spot but I don't know how natural that is.

That was actually my first day out with the new lens.
Yes, I know people do that but if depends. If it's in your garden and we're talking about sparrows and tits - that's their natural habitat anyway, so it's fine. But I'm against luring wild animals in the forest. It teaches them to rely on humans which will not always be there and weakens their ability to search for food.

I totally understand why you would like to show the surrounding habitat. However, in this particular image, I don't think you are showing anything with this particular framing that you couldn't still show with tighter framing. When the background habitat is a large area of very similar out-of-focus shapes and tones, you don't need to show a lot of it to show the viewer what the surroundings were like.

True.

Here you go, Mike. 300mm lens, backyard Nuthatch in Upstate New York.

And... I like Marcin's wide angle presentation, too. Perspective is in the eye of the photographer. :)

Shows how small these birds are in relation to their environment.

I was going to say that very thing. :)

I absolutely LOVE how you had gorgeous light directly on the Nuthatch, and were able to line him (her?) up with an area in the background that was in shadow. That makes this a truly wonderful image!

Thank you! :)
