Its very good either way. I have tried to catch birds in flight and rather than compose I ended up point/shoot - a lot more work required on my part. The dark background contrasting with the white of the subject make is a very pleasant shot - leaving space to move into is a nice touch, making it more about flight than a bird shot.

Would a faster shutter speed make elements in the shot even more clear?
In dove hunting it's said that if you can hit 20% of what you shoot at you're a great hunter. So I extrapolate to the camera... I'm going to have to take a buttload of shots.
I try to think of flying bird photography like Skeet or hunting... I have to lead the bird to get my shot. Gawd, I've grown lazy since my 20s.
I like the tease of water ripples to contrast the clear presence of the egret.
Its a beautiful bird and photo.. Hope you don't mind but saw you mentioned about the head being out of focus a pinch. I did a little wizard-magic... Hope you don't mind.
Thank you Joe ... this is why im still a humble student. Its still amazing how much detail there is to play with. Was going to try harder next time to get it correct in cam With the eos R i can push the shutter to 1/8000 - so i can even freeze the birds thoughts :)
I hear yea, yeah always best to get it right in camera for sure. I feel the limitations of my camera all the time, a nikon d5500.. shutter can only hit 1/4000 and most any shot over 3200 iso is worthless unless I stack... which can't be done for flying birds. (Really anything over 1600 but with reduction, sometimes 3200).
Love your photos you've been posting, you sure have seen a great many sites in your travels... and I'm sure you've only shared a fraction of your collection. :)

just wanted the head to be more sharper .. need to do a few more panning shots ...
That must be why my vultures seem a bit fuzzy... not panning evenly with them as they launched.

What magic is this, Joe? Loorrddd, I've got more to learn. :)
The most difficult component is the soul-bark from a tree that grows only in the swamps of Mordor. :)
Lol and dont forget to stir the boiling mix 3x anti clockwise
Joe... I see the photo icon on this thread. I must have inadvertently done something on my discussion post. Off to figure out what...
You're good, they do not allow photos to be placed withing threads of portfolio images.. :)
