I like the dark one better, but the tree to the right of the bird is very distracting. The shadow recovery is quite bad. DId you shoot in raw? If you did, and didn't do shadow recovery in the raw file, you might get a better result.
I used shadow protection in the second photo. I am not use to using shadow protection I need to find a good article on using both shadow protection and highlight protection. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

Gregory, I used DxO Photolab 3.1 for post processing and feel that it improved shadow issue. What do think.
