I love the eye contact and coyote's head low, wary approach to the view point. You also got the catch light in the sunward eye which serves to bring the subject to life.
I would lighten the shadowed half of the face just enough to bring out the eye without losing the contrast. The shadow is good but the eye is a bit lost in the dark spot to the side of the snout. I am also distracted by the stick in front of the animal and would clone it out, if not taking a photojournalistic approach. Finally, because I'm picky about it, I suggest selectively denoising the blue background. The tone and color differences should make it easy to do with a luminosity or color range mask. This last is a matter of taste. I hate noise in my images with the fury of thousand suns but understand some misguided souls feel differently.

Thanks for the tips. Much appreciated. I agree on the reed sticking up. I will try some of your suggestions.
