This great blue heron was about to have nice meal. I saw this bird from far away standing still and looking down at the water. All of a sudden, the bird struck the water with its beak. When it lifted its head back up, a fish was caught in its beak. The bird then flipped the fish in the air, catching it again precisely and then swallowing it whole.
Wow that is fantastic; incredible timing with the separation of the fish within the mouth.
Thanks! I was just at the right place and right time. Cheers!
WOW.
very very good shot mate
Thanks a lot, cheers!
Really nice photo, not sure if this is a fish. I would try shoot it from the eye level. I know that probably that was just 2 sec to pull the photo, but never the less you should be trying everytime to be on eye level. Big birds are bit more forgiving in that matter.
Thanks! Yea, I generally shoot eye level as much as possible. But it wouldn't have been possible with this shot. I was at higher ground and would need to be in the water to get lower at eye level. Although I do wear waders sometimes so I can be on the water when shooting. As for the fish, I wasn't sure either. It was flapping like a fish at the time lol. It all happened very quickly. Thanks again!
Brilliant capture! Never mind the angle, this moment might not happen in your lifetime again!!
Thanks! That's very true. This angle works actually, cause you can see inside the bird's beak giving it a '3d' look. I was particularly glad that I was able to see the fish's eye.
