Band-legged golden orb spider - Mozambique

Nephila senegalensis

Gorongosa National Park, Mozambique
Note the small flies on abdomen. They are probably in the family Milichiidae ('freeloader flies") that are attracted to spider prey esp. true bugs that emit a defensive secretion. The flies are biologically known as "kleptoparasites". Largest web I'ver ever seen, 10-15 ft from bottom to top.

Great shot, very informative. The resolution isn’t quite enough for me to make out the flies without being told that’s what they are, but the internet has limitations. Is there a place to see a higher res version?

Yea, pretty tough to make out the flies relative to the spider. Two small spots on the from of the abdomen. I took the shot with my 70-200 from maybe 10 feet away. Also, the spider is probably 5 or so inches long when you include the legs. Frankly, I didn't see the flies until after I got photo on the computer. Thanks and cheers!

Really nice picture. Very fascinating creature.

Thanks Deniz. They are truly spectacular with a golden web and great colors. Cheers.
