First Studio session

Here is my first studio session. I used 2 softboxes... one above and one on the right side. CC is appreciated!

Using studio for the first time can be a challenge! I think the pose could have worked well, but I am not crazy about the crop. I don't like the hand and leg chop and I think the subject is too centered. I have ideas on lighting, but I'll let people who know how to explain it better than me comment. I think the crop would be stronger if you pulled it in quite a bit and put her to the far right part of the frame and made it an upper body crop.

interesting but I do see your vision with the crop...I'll definitely try it out and see where it might take me.

Did the light on the right fire? I can't see how it's affected the exposure at all as the model looks like she's predominantly lit from above.

The crop is neither here nor there. Either pull back so you get her whole figure in or get in close to show her face more. She has very lovely cheekbones and a sharp jaw line which would make for a screamer of an image.

The other thing is that with a model with dark hair and a dark background, you will want to create a bit of separation so it doesn't look like her hair has disappeared into the background. The second the light could have either been used as a rim hair behind her (camera left) or directly behind her and aiming at the background to light up the background a bit.

One another thing with lighting from above is to position it in a way where you get some catchlights in her eyes. This gives her eyes a bit of life rather than looking dull.

Lastly about the pose, next time get the arm that she's leaning on away from the body. The way she has her upper arm tucked into the body to support herself is pushing out the excess skin so it makes it look quite unflattering. You only have to move it away a bit until it's not pinching the skin anymore. If that doesn't work, change the pose. There's nothing that's written in stone about what poses are mandatory.

Hope that helps :)
