Athens photos
A few shots from the winter of 2025. The last one was inside of the Acropolis Museum. (Unfortunately, I could get everyone to walk exactly where I wanted them to. hahaha)
New version of Bluristic available
For iPhone users - a new version of Bluristic has dropped (v1.8) which offers new features and significant improvements in stability & useability.
Focus Stacking ~ New to Me
I am interested in learning Macro/Closeup photography and understanding that Focus Bracketing is a good part of the process, I thought I would give focus stacking a try.
Vintage Lens
Another visit to our garden using a vintage lens (Canon FD 50mm f/1.4) on my Canon R5. NOTE: With this lens the minimum focusing distance is 18" at which point you have 1/4" depth of field.

I think if you came in even closer so the background was even more 'blurred' and the dessert at the front filled more of the frame I think it would be a more interesting shot..
Lighting is very nice and soft - softbox/diffused light directly behind food with low powered flash on right hand side as fill I would guess? might be way off though
Styling is decent, maybe a bit bland, perhaps needs another dimension to bring it all together, like something sprinkled over the top.
I think this image could also benefit from some post-production work to give it a bit more punch too
Thank you Mark for taking the time to comment!
Well dof is already pretty shallow, so i would probably not opt for even shallower. But i agree the composition would benefit from a different framing, a foreground element would create some more depth without getting super shallow dof.
Yes agree styling would defiantly add to the shot, maybe chocolate shavings, or some biscuit crumbles ? Will revisit this in the next week.
Im sure could be improved in post, i rarely go bananas on the commercial work i shoot for restaurants, for agencies it's done by the AD/RA.
Thanx again for taking the time to comment!
The overall style and composition is good, but it fails to give any context to the food. The viewer should not be wondering if this is a drink, or dessert, or ???
Hi Scott! Thanx for commenting. You have a very good point, some sort of texture would emphasis the type of dessert this is. Next time ill use pastry bag to fill the glass so i get a little more texture.
Thanx again for commenting!
Lighting Consist of
Two ELB400's. One ELB 400 with Elinchrom Indirect Octa 150cm shot thru 3010 roscoe directly behind the dessert and second ELB400 with the Elinchrom square reflector camera left shot thru a california sun bounce scrim.
Camera right white bounce card and a small silver card.
Hi Paul - not a critique - if it was me, I'd concentrate on one of the desserts - if there was any sign of the other two I'd have them further back and blurred more, so they don't take the attention from your dessert. Sigh - being of french extraction, I often describe myself using that word and tell people who ask that "je suis un fromage!" My wife laughs at me, whenever we're in France and she catches me standing open mouthed in front of a fromagerie.
Thank you Jean Pierre for your comments, will revisit this shot soon and will certainly try that. Much appreciated!
Hi Paul -- also not a critique. I think it's very good, just not amazing. the quality we all strive for :).
It's like a nice stock shot -- it doesn't take any chances. i think I would have not uses the bounce card, to start with, or maybe used it with the back light alone -- no other sources. But I like contrast.
