Rate some photos?

Hi guys! I would really like some honest ratings on my photos, many have no votes and one has only one, but very far off from what I would expect.

Thanks,
Tyler

Need to work on composition and framing. That and it seems you like to underexpose for a dark look. That could work but then you need to get the light parts really light and/or take up more of the frame. I'm not sure what software you're using but don't be afraid to either combine exposures or dodge and burn parts. Some shots I feel like could've been a lot tighter while others I think could've been further away. Especially if its for advertising purposes. Its one thing to keep it true for photo journalism but advertising is all about presenting it in the best way possible. Like the one with the tripod visible that someone else mentioned. Also keep in mind depending on the advertising purpose brighter is generally better, Boston Rock Gym is a decent composition and really like that you can see his forearm flexing to give it some dynamic element but its again underexposed. If they want to use it in a print they're going to have to brighten it up. Nice amount of space for a designer to add copy too though which is stuff to consider when taking photos for advertisements.

Thanks Ryan! I think that my monitor needs to be calibrated, but I still have a hard time (especially with climbing gym photos) with making them brighter, because of the lighting.

Hi Tyler, It looks fun to do what you do! You shoot on a Canon don't you? My advice if you're having problems with the brightness in you photos is to "expose to the right" slightly. Basically, overexpose a touch and recover the details in post. (of course I'm only talking about in the location you do your climbing shots in). Do you shoot in RAW or JPEG? It would make things a lot easier from a RAW file.

I do shooot canon. I have realized that and I'm starting to correct. I do shoot in raw as well. And yeah, it is tons of fun doing what i do. Being with climbers, all of whom are dedicated and motivating and inspiring and also deep down you can pull some creative help out of every single one of them! And they are always willing to hold flashes and stuff, so they are an awesome crew to work with!

I'm pretty jealous mate, maybe you've found your niche photography wise? It would never be boring! Do you set your white balance manually before each shot? That might help with the lighting (I take it it's nasty sports center fluorescents?)

Because I shoot raw, i just use auto white balance, and correct it later. It definitely could be a niche, but there are already tons of people in the industry! And I just can't wait for a chance to get some outdoor photos!
