more practice

My wonderful wife of almost 24 years agreed to let me practice light and lighting a bit more. Here are some of the results. CC always welcome.
cheers,
Tris

Tell us about your lighting.

the first two had a speedlight through a shoot through umbrella high camera right about 2.5m away, with another speedlight through a small softbox behind the subject camera left. The third was a speedlight through a softbox camera left about 1.5m away not quite at 45 degrees, with a reflector camera right.
cheers,
Tris

If you play around with lighting the wall behind your wife, you'll get a bright, white background that will give the portraits a more "exciting" look as opposed to the drab grey. Conversely, you can have her move further from the wall so that you get less exposure to the wall, giving you darker background. Here's a pretty good video from Gavin Hoey (affiliated with Adorama) that explains this concept https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDGn4VzEOlU

Hi Fumi,
thanks for the advice. I was so focused on trying to figure out the light on her face that I didn't think about what the light was doing on the background. I'll be more aware of that next time. thanks again.
cheers,
Tris

No problem mate. What you're shooting in front of can be just as important as the subject you're shooting. And if you're using speedlites, try getting your wife out of the studio. Pack up the gear, head to a park or a garden, play around with some posing, and make a day of it (I'm sure she'll love the romance of it as well). As far as the lighting on her, I would possibly invest in some larger softboxes. You'll get much more diffuse light spread on her face. Using artificial lighting, much like editing, is all about subtlety. You want to use it without letting on that you're actually using it. Play around and learn by trial and error, or watch more youtube! Both FStoppers and Adorama have a whole treasure trove of knowledge available for free. Either way, have fun with it! Can't wait to see your progress!
