Tips/Advice Before Red Bull Illume Submissions End?
Red Bull Illume submissions are approaching the end. Has anyone entered any shots? Any advice before the submission phase is over would be appreciated.
I have not entered because i realized after getting phyched about it that you have to be 18. I would suggest being unique, entering into the right category, and doing plenty of color and contrast correction in lr or editing software
Check out the Red Bull Illume website and Facebook page for tips on your submissions. They're doing a series called 'Spotlight' that gives you an insight on the kind of images they're after for each category!
Well apparently someone we all know very well is a judge this year ;)
I will say most of the winners have more of a landscape feel to them or feature pro athletes. Winning a spot in the Illume is a goal of mine but I don't think it will happen this year. Good luck to everyone submitting
Yes, I seen that Lee is a judge the other day! I have also noticed the landscape feel! Such as the 2013 and 2010 winners where the athletes are one of the smaller "objects" in the entire photograph, yet it seems to kind of work. Good luck to everyone as well!
Yeah I'm thinking of going all out for the next Illume and really focusing on creating an image that is both badass and also one that fits their format well. I don't shoot Illume style sports images but it's a goal of mine to have a photo in it that places well. It might cost some money to produce the photo(s) in my head but I think it will be well worth it.
I think the reason the landscape format works well is because it gives you a sense of depth of just how dangerous some of these locations can be for athletes. Simply taking a well timed and well lit photo isn't as impressive as it was 10-20 years ago and now you really have to wow the audience with something pretty unbelievable.
That being said, there are a few categories that have a very different feel like the "lifestyle" one and some of the composite and freestyle categories that are a bit more artsy. Personally though, I love the unique angles and the massive landscape photos where the athletes are small and that's what I hope to accomplish with my own submissions.
Awesome :D I need to try that in the next three years too I think haha. I had only heard of red bull illume about 6 months ago (living under a rock) so I felt really rushed to get something. Next time maybe haha.

That's too bad man! Yeah the final images are always top notch! Trying to get creative in these last 30 days of submissions!
