Beauty lighting suggestions for a beginner

Hi guys! Sorry to post in this section, but I'm not sure where else was really appropriate lol. Anyhow, I've been gradually getting into photography over the past few months and am ready to take the plunge into some studio lighting (I want to primarily do beauty photography, a la Julie Kuzmenko), but I am so confused about all of the options available and what I REALLY need. I originally had my heart set on a a sort of clamshell setup, with an Alien Bee strobe attached to a beauty dish, and a simple silver reflector for fill, but that leaves me with no hair/rim/background light. What is truly necessary when starting out, and does anyone have suggestions on good booms/stands, as well as beauty dishes, to go with Alien Bees? Also, is it possible to use a strobe as my main light, but go a little cheaper on rim/back/hair lights by using speedlights? My budget is a little tight. Thank you so much. ANY help is much appreciated. BTW- I want to do mainly face shots only. The most I'd be getting in is hair and maybe neck and shoulders.
