Jacob Bingham's picture

CC

I shared a photo kind of like this one on the portrait photography group and some dude said something like "you can't have so much going on in the frame the focus is the model not whats around them". Which I would agree with most of the time. But there are times when the area you are in is just so gorgeous that you have to include it. Which I know see that there are two groups for this reason. Anyway I just wanted to get some CC on this photo. I'll be sure to return the favor and check out some of your work.

Hi Jacob. I love what is going on with the water and the rocks. I think you could draw attention to that and your subject better by cropping out the trees. The trees don't have to same beautiful light as the rest of the image and the white sky is distracting. Beyond that, I think you just need to amp up the post processing. I'm missing your subject because there is nothing to draw my eye to them. I think they fall within the same tones of the rock and are lost. If you did a bit of dodging, added a tad of contrast and maybe a very slight amount of vibrance to the couple then it would help them stand out. I hope this helps you and that I wasn't too critical.

I like the photo overall but the couple does blend into the photo a bit to much, I would have focused more on them and cropped out the right part of the picture.

I would have to disagree in saying that you "can't" include as much of the background or environment as you want. However when including extra background information, you may need to take extra care to ensure that the primary subject is clear. This can be done through exposure contrast, and/or color contrast to help pull your subject out front. In this particular image, I feel that the exposure of the background is a little light, and the light on the subjects could be warmer. This image can be salvaged into a very effective one by simply cropping in to below the rock line and in from the right to just outside the little gold "almost triangle" shape right at the bottom of the rocks, at the edge of the water line, and in from left, almost to the waterfall on that side. It could be strengthened further by selecting a nice soft area surrounding the couple, and warm that area a tiny bit, and then cool the rest of the frame to add some color separation.
