Post your BTS & Finished images for your environmental portraits!

So to get the ball rolling, i'll start with my most recent Environmental shot. Taken with Clay Cook & Jacob Roberts in Red Rock Canyon during WPPI this year. We were using the Profoto B2 with a soft-lighter as the modifier in the middle of some CRAZY weather.

Red Rock is so beautiful and one of the best settings in NV to do environmental portraits. I have used it several times for my automotive work and it has yielded great results. Great job with these photos ;)

Thanks Dylon! That particular day was one helluva adventure but I still absolutely love the images!

One of my most recent shots; first time using A) Natural Light, B) an 85 f/1.2 for Portraiture, and C) Shooting towards the sun.

The flare was insane! Having the lens hood did nothing, so I had to use my hand instead; which mistakenly became a natural looking flare at the top of the frame!

here is a cosplay shot i just shot also in the Red Rock area. let me know what you guys think. there was a second shot to make fixing the corner easier but i didnt feel the need to post it since i just masked it in.

Nikon D610, 85/1.8.
light: Godox AD360 with 19in softbox in HSS mode, full 1/1 power.
f2.8, 1/2500s, iso100. Mid day sun.

I don't dislike this photo at all, it's lovely. If I'm being honest though, I want so much more from it. It's just falls flat to me. In all aspects.

My thoughts:

1. I wish the lighting was a bit more stark on her, I almost can't even tell you are hitting her with a strobe/Speedlight because of how much the background has exposure. I get it would fall in shadow more if you didn't, and the background would have been overexposed, but it just needs more, UNF.

2. The models pose just seems uncomfortable. Looks like she is about to fall over. It's not all bad, it helps her fill the frame nicely, but I would have loved to have seen her stretched out a bit more.

3. The shot is so tight for everything going on here. What a wonderful wide shot this would be! So much potential for a shot full of movement and location! Oh I can just picture it! Those mountains in the back coming into give such a cool perspective swing.

4. It's such a still photograph for an outfit that SCREAMS for movement. UGH! again, I can just picture so much more potential here that has gone untouched. The dress flowing behind her, a strong sturdy pose, accenting her strong facial features. It being an overcast day, bringing in the stark clouds!

In the end, it's just underwhelming. I see so much further story and potential here that was untapped. It's soft, it's generic for the story you were trying to tell.

I would honestly revisit this and go the extra mile next time.

David, I really love this shot. You obviously are a really talented guy. A couple of things, I'd like to see a little more work on this shot in post. Work on background and a it more detail and color intensity on dress. Beautiful!

WOW!
