Hello from a newbie.

Hey everyone! I just thought I'd take a moment to introduce myself. I've been shooting landscapes primarily over the past year and a half and recently decided to add headshots and portraits to my body of work. Really loving a lot of the work I've seen in this group so far, and looking forward to getting to know you all.

Here's an image of my friend Yoann who was kind enough to take time out of his day to sit for me while I futzed around with the lighting during my first headshot session.

That is a superb headshot, Michael!

Great work. Did you learn this form the cinematic head shot tutorial? Is his standing or seated. It looks standing

Hi Ashley,

Thank you. :) I didn't use the tutorial, but the style itself is inspired by Dylan Patrick's work. As a beginner I'm still trying to find my style, and this is one of a few I've tried to emulate. And yes, he is standing. I find that having clients sit does two things: it makes them more inclined to slouch, and it limits movement. I started out by having him seated, but by the end I found it easier to have him standing

Like it. Superb shot.... (I'm a newbie too)

Hi Michael.
You've got some nice action going on here. Did you purposefully match the background colours to Yoann, as they compliment him very well indeed.
I take it, probably 200mm, about 4-5mtrs away at f3.2 or somewhere close to that?
re: Sitting vs Standing, you nailed it! I have my sitter near the edge of a stool, feet on the ground and if they're inclined to slouch, I give them the circular reflector to hold and try to get them to engage the camera
.
Bet Yoann likes this shot. Well done! regards - Greg

Hey Greg,

Thank you for your feedback. I'd like to take credit for intentionally setting and controlling all the elements of the scene, but the truth is this was my first session and would not have thought to have asked him to dress this way purposefully. He just happens to have great taste, and the background just happened to work :)

Yes, this was shot at, or very near 200mm, at an aperture of f/2.8 at a distance about 3 or 4 feet. I had him staring at this point – the sitting wasn't working for me.

Thanks again for your feedback, it is much appreciated.

Any interest in this group?

Hi all, I was looking for such a group but see that although there are many members there hasn’t been a single post. Is there interest out there in getting this group going?
