To chop off hair or not?

What do you all think? I like the hair unchopped, but I flip flop all the time!

Like the uncropped. Look like she is having a great time.

Uncropped, though I would get rid of some of the more prominent stray hairs. Also you might consider masking her and throwing another gray background in there, I see some messiness in camera left background.

Btw checked your site, you have some really punchy headshots, nice lighting job.

You're cropping the hair in both images. For me the more cropped one looks stronger since the rest doesn't add much.

I think I too would go uncropped, unless you really take it in, maybe.

As mentioned, your "uncropped" image still crops the hair--but that shallow crop looks unintentional, like a mistake. That image should, then, be in conventional portrait format and give space around the hair.

If you're going to crop at all, you're better off cropping enough to look intentional with a horizontal format.

I prefer the top image as the crop really draws you in to her eyes and expression creating a more intimate feel between the viewer and the subject. The second photo really doesn't balance out the image as I think there is too much of her hair and head in the third top half.

Cropping when done right makes the image stronger. However, I believe the crop depends on the focal length of the lens used. If you fill the frame when taking a portrait, say with 105mm lens, you'll probably crop off a bit of the models head. I hate to say this, but no one really cares about the top of someone's head. Just sayin. I hope this helps.

Trevor, I like the second image better. Maybe the hair cropped somewhere in between the two. Nice shots.

I like the first image best. I'm really drawn to her eyes. Great work!

Cropped when shooting from above seldom looks correct, imo. Lighting is great.

Great Shot! Amazing expression.

I like the cropped image better, the face is closer up.
