Deer on the Beach
I don't normally shoot directly towards the sun, but...
Bluristic mirror mode
I must admit I have been lax in both my shooting and posting recently, perhaps due to the fact my wife has now retired, and we are spending a LOT more time together doing various activities.
An afternoon out on the water
It was mid September late in the afternoon, a group of sailboats were out on the water enjoying the weather, there was a soft breeze blowing, pushing on the sails.

Handsome kid! Not sure if this is helpful as I am relatively new to portraiture also. Have you shot flash directly at his face? I'd be looking up Rembrandt lighting if you're doing single light photography. IMHO, this image looks a little on the flat side because of the direct light source.
I don't have any lighting equipment, I've only just started out. This was one of the very few shots I was proud of whilst in manual mode. I will certainly look into lighting techniques though, thanks for the tip 👍🏼.
NICE
Lighting looks fine to me. My only issue is his left hand directing my attention away from his head. However, if he was my kid I would hang a 16x20 in my living room!! :-)
